<10월의 하늘>은 전국 중소도시의 도서관에서 해당 지역의 청소년들을 대상으로 개최되는 ‘도서관 과학 강연’ 행사입니다.
<10월의 하늘>은 기획에서 준비, 당일 강연 및 행사진행에 이르는 전 과정이 오로지 기부자들의 재능 나눔으로 이루어집니다. 이를 통해 재능 기부자들에게는 이웃과 사회를 위해 봉사하고 자신이 가진 재능을 사회적 재능으로 확산시킬 수 있는 기회를 제공하며, 참여 청소년들에게는 과학이 주는 즐거움을 맛보고 우주와 자연이 주는 경이로움을 체험할 수 있도록 하는데 목적이 있습니다. 나아가 재능을 나누는 사람과 그 재능을 전달받는 사람이 서로 따듯한 교감을 나눔으로써, 본 행사를 통해 실천된 재능기부 문화를 사회 전반으로 확산시키고, 지속적인 생명력을 갖도록 하자는 비전을 가지고 있습니다.
<10월의 하늘>의 행사 명칭은 탄광촌 소년 호머 히컴이 로켓 과학자의 꿈을 이뤄가는 과정을 그린 영화 <October Sky>에서 가져 왔습니다. 호머 히컴을 꿈꾸게 해준 것이 뉴스에 나온 한 꼭지 기사였듯, 꿈을 갖게 되는 계기는 결코 거창하지만은 않습니다. 무심코 집어 든 책 속에서, 우연히 본 영화 속에서, 학창시절 들었던 어느 강연 속에서, 자신의 영혼과 삶을 뒤흔드는 만남을 가질 수 있습니다. <10월의 하늘>은 과학이 주는 즐거움과 경이로움을 청소년들에게 전달하고, 그 만남 속에서 청소년들이 과학에 대해 꿈 꿀 수 있는 계기를 마련할 수 있도록 돕고자 합니다. 그리하여 그 청소년들 중 과학자가 탄생해서, 10년~20년 후 또 다른 청소년들에게 자신의 경험을 전할 수만 있다면 더할 나위 없는 기쁨일 것입니다.

Invitation to "Octorber Sky"
The event <October Sky> which was
held successively at 29 libraries over the country last year is due to be held
at 43 libraries over the world at 2 p.m. on coming October 29.(Sat.) in even
further expanded scale. It is a lecture event on science co-hosted by
'Preparatory Committee of October Sky' and ‘Korean Library Association’. All
the procedures of the event, including planning, preparation, lecture, and
supervision, will be performed through perfect talent donations by
participants.
The event is to provide talent donators
with opportunities to serve neighbors and society, and to diffuse their own
talent to society, and let youths enjoy science and experience wonders of
universe and nature. Further, it intend to encourage donation of talents so
that it may become sustainable by enabling donors and beneficiaries of the
talents commune with each other.
<October Sky>, the name of this
event, is originated from a film of the same name which portrays the process
Homer Hickam, a boy out of a coal-mining town, realizes a dream to be a
scientist. Like an accidental news of the launch of Sputnik, an artificial
satellite, inspired Hickam with a dream to be a scientist, it is not so
grandiose moment which imbue us with a dream. An unintended book we read or an
accidental lecture we visit in a school day can decide our life.
<October Sky> is going to deliver
wonders and pleasures of science to the youths, and provide them with chances
to dream on science. It will be our pleasure if a number of boys and girls
participating in the event grow up to be scientists in the decades to come, and
convey their experience to the youths then again. We solicit interest and
encouragement from all of you.
